At the heart of Europe’s audiovisual economy: how commercial broadcasters support growth, jobs, culture and trusted news
In an independent report commissioned by the Association of Commercial Television and Video on Demand Services in Europe (ACT), we looked at the role commercial broadcasters play in Europe's economy, culture and news across the 27 EU Member States, Norway, Switzerland and the UK. We quantified their investment in original productions, news and sports rights, and the wider audiovisual value chain, and estimated the value and jobs this investment supported across the supply chain and the wider economy.
Our findings include:
In 2024, European commercial broadcasters invested €46.9 billion across content, acquisitions and the wider audiovisual ecosystem: this included €12.1 billion in original productions, €11.0 billion in sports rights and €1.5 billion in news
€48.0 billion in gross value added (GVA): this investment generated €18.5 billion in GVA directly and a further €29.4 billion through supply chains and wider spending
664,000 jobs: commercial broadcaster investment supported 664,000 jobs across Europe, 253,000 of them directly
